History is a great power – when you know history you can understand many things surrounding us. Every thing created by human hands has a history. So as a great Christmas holidays are coming - we will talk about the history of
Christmas cards.
It is considered, that the first Christmas greeting card was developed by English painter Dobson in 1784. On the first
Merry Christmas card the painter depicted a Christmas tree with a family around and a winter view. But only after 46 years, when English businessman sir Henry Cole asked his friend painter John Horsley to make painted cards for Christmas for his relatives where he depicted his family helping poor people, reminding others about charity and mercy – it has a great success. Relatives of sir Henry Cole were so exited about those Christmas greetings cards showing to everyone around, that there was plenty of talk, critics from envious people, though all people liked it so much. Sir Henry Cole didn’t think long time – next year he produced thousand of holiday Christmas cards with a cost of 1 shilling (it was big money then!). Though he thought it’s just a temporary fashion not a real business. But after about 20 years the production of Xmas cards got developed.
Still historians think that the Middle Age time merry Christmas cards existed already. Local aristocracy had a tradition (fashion) to invite guests for a Christmas party with painted Christmas invitations or simply to greet them with a special (unique) Christmas gift cards which where delivered with a courier.
It was before… Now we have many kinds of Christmas card greetings. In our age of high technologies the main way to greet people with Christmas is to send
Christmas Ecards by internet. But it is another story already…
Merry Christmas to everyone and do not forget about charity and mercy!
